Civil War Symposium April 15-17th Great Success!

The Civil War Symposium opened on Friday evening with the unveiling of the newly restored cannon Sherman donated to the veterans of Lancaster after the war.  The Sons of Union Veterans, William McKinley Camp 21, hosted this evening event held at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds.  This group spearheaded the restoration of the cannon.

As part of its partnership with General Sherman Junior High School, the Sherman House Museum sponsored both an essay contest and a poster contest for seventh grade students.  PNC Bank donated gifts and FHA presented the winners with a U.S. Savings Bond and certificate.  The topic of the essay contest was:  Why Did We Have a Civil War?  First place was awarded to, Jared Thomas, second to Matthew Mikesell, and third to Jessica Murphy.  Prize-winning poster artists were:  Kayla Snyder, first; Alyssa McClung, second; and Samantha Colby, third. 

Headliners for the symposium on Saturday and Sunday were noted historians John Marszalek and Craig Symonds.  Also speaking were:  Frank Bullock, Jayne Dye, Chris Evans, Donna Lawrence, Tom Moe and Mayor David Smith.  Photos of the weekend taken by Nicholas G. Powell.
